Nature meets art - An interplay of architecture in the landscape
Art by Swedish born Kerstin Maxwell now living in Alberta, Canada. Kerstin Maxwell paints what engages her in nature and often a structure of sorts is part of it. Impressionistic realism meets fantasy.
“If my paintings don’t evoke emotion in people I haven’t done what I set out to do”.
Artist Statement
As a Swedish Canadian artist, I depict vibrant and textured oil paintings that often feature landscapes with architectural elements. The use of impasto technique piles on a significant textural quality to my work. Cold wax, palette knives and other tools that are close at hand are in great demand in my studio.
My love of the simplicity of architecture found in the area of my birthplace in Tidaholm, Sweden reminds me to stay close to my love of nature. It is this interplay between landscape – free and wild and the structure of shapes and simple colour in buildings that resonate with me. In my artwork, this is where nature meets art. The goal is to stay brave, open and authentic as an artist.
Now residing in rural Alberta, this simple but bucolic environment continues to invite me to keep this salient connection to landscape and architecture.
As a born creative, I also often turn to botanicals . It speaks to the fleeting beauty impressions in nature. My style is loose with impressionistic brushstrokes emphasizing the unencumbered importance of the lifestyle I seek. Harmonious colour with confident brushwork is often interrupted with bright splashes of colour.
