Does a rule cancel out freedom or support it?
This morning I ponder upon how rules fit within this life of freedom. Can I live with rules? Do rules have value or a purpose? Can the freedom seeking Kerstin Maxwell live or abide withing these restrictions?
As an artist I am told “You have to know the Rules!”, which was frustrating at first when my premise was “I just want to paint something!”. Later on I came to realise that this wasn’t some bloated Ego in the art world that wanted to impose their authority on the rest of us but more a sense of learning the realities regarding how we humans react/interpret the visual world. As I now have a better grasp of these rules I can create better Art. It improves because now I understand how to effect human emotion and how to attract attention. That particular stroke of the paintbrush. The texture created by that palette knife. The tint, the hue, the line or lack thereof… my choices….It all effects you the viewer. That’s the truth. That’s a reality. It’s a rule.
When I chose to live by the rules of nutrition, relationships, sowing-and-reaping etc., it is liberating and empowering, not restrictive. At least in my experience.
There are “facts”, “realities”, “truths” ,…-however you want to label it – regarding life.
Don’t fight it.
Understand it.
Trust it.
It will enable you to embrace and live Life more fully!
Rules are not “restrictions”. They are guideposts which empowers my life of freedom and Kerstin Maxwell the ever striving Artist.
